Working on the cover artwork for Urban Landscapes was a project with a personal connection. I have known Mario Meyendriesch for well over two and a half decades, ever since we first crossed paths through the metal scene in Germany’s Ruhr area. Since then, Mario has developed into an impressively versatile musician and producer, active across very different genres and roles.

With Ka:Jel, his ambient and lo-fi project, he explores a quieter, more atmospheric sonic world — largely shaped by Eurorack-driven sound design and a strong sense of reduction. For the upcoming release Urban Landscapes, I had the opportunity to create the mixed-media cover artwork.

I do not want to overinterpret the album before its release, especially because the music works best when experienced directly. What I can say is that the tracks create a striking sense of mood with very little excess. The result feels understated, immersive and emotionally precise. When Mario sent me the material in advance, I was immediately drawn in — and I am looking forward to seeing how listeners respond once the album is out.

Urban Landscapes by Ka:Jel will be released on May 1, 2026.
